I've mostly given up buying the mags these days, but bought the October edition of Golf Monthly whilst waiting for the missus to arrive at Gatwick the other night. In an item about hitting long irons more purely, a caption reads "a good set-up will help you strike the ball on the upswing".

Admittedly, the item talks about a ball on a tee, but even so, this seems quite an unintuitive statement. Still, I'm not a teaching pro and it could be a good tip (for a non-S&T swing), so what does everyone else think about this ?

Slingshot.

You never, never want to hit an iron on the upswing. The divot always wants to be after the ball.

Thanks Sam.

The pro giving the tip is head pro at Meldrum House. The blurb at the beginning of the article says "our top 25 coaches are some of the most experienced and knowledgeable in teachers in the world."

Funny, someone I know in the coaching industry told me that a lot of the guys who feature in these sorts of articles do so because they know the editor or similar.

Slingshot.
